NOPCOMMERCE

A Comprehensive Guide to nopCommerce SEO

Today's topic is akin to the heartbeat of any eCommerce store—Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you've chosen nopCommerce for your online venture, congratulations are in order. This platform is rich in SEO capabilities, and in this issue, we will delve deeply into the strategies and features that can transform your nopCommerce store into a search engine favourite.

The SEO Advantage of nopCommerce

Let's kick things off by acknowledging the elephant in the room—or should I say, the search engine on the browser? Why is SEO crucial? In the simplest terms, SEO is what makes your online store discoverable. The higher you rank in search engine results, the more organic traffic flows your way. And guess what? nopCommerce is engineered with SEO-friendly features right out of the box. From URL rewrites to sitemaps and microdata, nopCommerce has thoughtfully incorporated elements that make SEO not just an add-on, but an integral part of its architecture.

The question isn't whether SEO is important; it's how we can maximise it. SEO brings visibility, and visibility brings traffic. nopCommerce goes beyond the basics to provide a raft of SEO-friendly features right out of the box, from URL rewrites to sitemaps and even microdata. This platform doesn't just support SEO; it integrates it into its very architecture.

Metadata Matters: Title and Description

Remember how we used to cram keywords into articles back in the day? Well, those days are gone. Modern SEO is about providing valuable, relevant content, and your metadata should reflect that. nopCommerce makes it easy to enter meta titles and descriptions for each product or category. This is SEO 101, but it's amazing how many stores overlook it. Take a moment to describe your products accurately, focusing on the words your customers would use. This not only helps search engines index your site effectively but also improves the user experience.

Modern SEO transcends keyword stuffing. It's about delivering valuable, relevant content, and this begins with your metadata. nopCommerce facilitates easy metadata entry for every product and category, allowing you to focus on descriptive and user-relevant terms. This dual advantage ensures better indexing by search engines and improves user experience.

Some of the options affecting title tags and meta descriptions are in the General Settings SEO panel (navigate to Configuration → Settings → General settings). Here, you have several options to ensure your store is search-engine friendly:

Default Page Title

This sets the name of your site that will be appended (or prepended) to the title tags of your pages. Title tags are understood to be one of the most important elements of a page used by search engine algorithms, used as a succinct way to understand the topic of the page. As such, the words in each page’s title tag are crucial to the search terms it is likely to rank for.

The title tag is also used as the text of the link to the page in search results, meaning a well-crafted title that succinctly describes the page's content can significantly boost click-through rates.

Default Meta Keywords & Description

You can safely ignore the meta keywords field as it isn’t used by search engines. The meta description is often used by search engines as the descriptive “snippet” below a link to a page in search results. Crafting compelling meta descriptions can be the difference between a user clicking on your link or a competitor's.

Ideally, you should write a unique meta description for each page, category and product, but where this isn’t feasible, you can set a default here. The “Generate product meta description” option will use a product’s short description as the meta description in that page.

Google doesn’t usually display snippets longer than 160 characters, so it’s best to stay below this limit (but not too short, as that will be seen as unhelpful and Google will select text from the page itself as the description instead).

Page Title SEO Adjustment

This option lets you decide whether your store name (Default Page Title) should appear at the start or end of your title tags.

The SEO panel in the General settings page is also where you can specifically set the title tag and meta description for your homepage, along with choosing whether you want your site to serve with or without the www. prefix to the domain. There is no technical or SEO benefit to either option, as long as you are consistent and there is a 301 permanent redirect from one to the other (e.g. if you serve the site as www.mywebsite.com then https://mywebsite.com should 301 redirect to https://www.mywebsite.com). nopCommerce will put these redirects in place for you automatically.

Mobile-First Approach: A Game-Changer

Did you know that Google employs mobile-first indexing? This means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of a site for ranking and indexing. nopCommerce shines in this aspect with its responsive design, ensuring that your store looks and works great on mobile devices. You don’t have to go through hoops to optimise your store for mobile—it’s already done for you!

User-Friendly URLs: Keep It Simple and Descriptive

One of the many SEO-friendly features in nopCommerce is the ability to generate user-friendly URLs. Forget about jumbled letters and numbers that make no sense. With nopCommerce, you can create descriptive, clean URLs that not only tell search engines what the page is about but also provide a better understanding for users. This can be a massive boost to your click-through rates.

Leverage Rich Snippets and Microdata

Rich snippets are the additional pieces of information that appear under search results, like ratings or product prices. They make your page stand out and often lead to higher click-through rates. Guess what? nopCommerce supports this feature natively. By using microdata to mark up your product pages, you can make it easier for search engines to understand the content, thus potentially improving your visibility in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

Page Load Speed: Every Millisecond Counts

A slow website can kill your SEO efforts and nopCommerce knows this. That's why it provides various options like bundling and minification of scripts to enhance page load speed. Additionally, its support for multiple databases ensures that your website can handle large volumes of data without a hitch, maintaining a fast load time.

Content Is King: Utilise nopCommerce CMS Features

Quality content is the cornerstone of SEO, and nopCommerce comes with a robust CMS to manage your blogs, forums, and other content pages. Regularly updated, valuable content can not only rank well but also keep your audience engaged, making them more likely to convert.

Sitemaps: Navigating Your Way to Higher Rankings

An XML sitemap is essentially a roadmap of your website that helps search engines crawl it more efficiently. The good news? nopCommerce allows for effortless sitemap generation. By submitting your XML sitemap to search engines like Google and Bing, you're essentially laying out the welcome mat, allowing them to better index your site and subsequently enhance its visibility in search results.

Canonical Tags: The Roadblock Removers

Duplicate content can be a real spoiler when it comes to SEO. Search engines can get confused when they encounter similar content across multiple pages on your site, and this can negatively impact your rankings. nopCommerce has a built-in feature for setting canonical tags, which tell search engines which version of a page to consider as the 'official' one. This way, you avoid SEO penalties for duplicate content and ensure that your most relevant pages get the ranking juice.

Duplicate content often occurs on ecommerce sites where products appear in multiple categories, or sort order and filter options use URL query parameters (e.g. mywebsite.com/category?sort=ascending). A canonical tag tells search engines that the query parameter URL is just another version of the main category page and therefore can be treated as identical for content and indexing purposes.

Onsite Reviews: Boosting Credibility and Rankings

Online reviews have become pivotal in the customer journey. But did you know they can also help with SEO? Reviews generate fresh, user-generated content, which search engines love, but more importantly they are a cornerstone of “E-E-A-T” (Experience, Expertise, Authority & Trust) that is now a huge part of Google’s algorithm. Plus, they can increase your click-through rates when shown as rich snippets. nopCommerce comes with an integrated review feature that makes it seamless for customers to leave reviews, thereby boosting both your credibility and your SEO.

That said, it’s usually a really good idea to use a third-party review system such as https://www.reviews.io/ as these will handle the review gathering, and show review stars next to your site’s pages on the Search Engine Results pages:

Promiscuous self-promotion: we built a really good (we like to think, anyway) reviews.io plugin

Sitelinks Searchbox Schema: Instant User Navigation

When you search for a brand or a website in Google, you may have noticed a small search box beneath the main website link, allowing you to search within that site directly from the SERPs. That’s made possible through Sitelinks Searchbox Schema. Integrating this schema into your nopCommerce site can improve user experience by facilitating direct navigation to the desired pages. Better user experience often translates to SEO gains!

Image Optimisation: More Than Just Eye Candy

Images aren't just there to make your site look good; they can also contribute to your SEO strategy. How? Through descriptive file names, alt text, and by leveraging formats that provide good quality without compromising loading speed. nopCommerce offers a user-friendly interface to manage all these elements, helping your site rank not only in web search but also in image search (Google says that 20% of people using image search are shopping).

It’s also worth considering the adoption of an external image-serving solution such as https://sirv.com/ or https://cloudinary.com/ - both these solutions provide measurable gains in performance. Both are capable of pre-sizing images for mobile devices so that huge images do not have to be downloaded onto small displays, which vastly improves the user experience.

Shameless plug: We’ve got comprehensive plugins for several versions of nopCommerce for both these solutions.
